The Best Fantasy Books for Middle Graders (Ages 8-13)

Once kids grow out of the picture book phase, it’s difficult to know what books will interest them and be on their grade level. Look no further! I have put together this list of some of my favorite reads, including new releases and some old favorites. All of these books are fantasy reads (which tend to be the favorite genre in this age group) that have a similar vibe to Fablehaven. I almost called this list “What to Read After Fablehaven” but because I know there are readers 8 to 13 years old (and parents!) who haven’t been introduced to this magical world, we decided to put it on our list too. Each of these books passes my *Robin-approved* list, meaning I have taken into account book ratings across the board, as well as read them too, so you know you’re getting the best!

Many of these books are part of a series so if you like one, there are plenty more where that came from. Also, these authors are some of the best for this age group so be sure to check out their other books too. Here are all the details on my favorite fantasy reads for middle graders:

Going Wild by Lisa Mc Mann
Charlie Wilde knew her life would change forever when her family moved from the city of Chicago to the suburbs of Arizona…and that was before she found the bracelet. After putting it on, she notices odd things start to happen. Suddenly Charlie seems to have the speed of a cheetah and the strength of an elephant—and that’s just the beginning. She would be thrilled about her transformation if she had any idea how to use the device or control her amazing powers. So Charlie is forced to put her trust in new friends to help her uncover the surprising truth behind the mysterious bracelet.
Raffa Santana has always loved the mysterious Forest of Wonders. For a gifted young apothecary like him, every leaf could unleash a kind of magic. When an injured bat crashes into his life, Raffa invents a cure from a rare crimson vine that he finds deep in the Forest. His remedy saves the animal but also transforms it into something much more than an ordinary bat, with far-reaching consequences. Raffa’s experiments lead him away from home to the forbidding city of Gilden, where troubling discoveries make him question whether exciting botanical inventions—including his own—might actually threaten the very creatures of the Forest he wants to protect.
Dragon Run by Patrick Matthews
Can a zero become a hero? Testing Day is supposed to be a day of celebration for Al Pilgrommor. Born into a wealthy family, he expects to follow in his successful father’s footsteps. Of course, that all depends on the rank number Al receives at the testing. The higher the rank he has tattooed onto his neck, the better his life will be. To his surprise and horror, Al is revealed to be rank zero, the lowest of the low. He’s now not only an outcast – he’s also a danger to his entire family. So Al goes on the run, fleeing the brutal Cullers, men who hunt down zeroes . . . and put them to death. Cast out of his home, cut off from his friends, and armed with only a sword and his wits, Al is reduced to just surviving. As he meets other outcasts, however, he begins to suspect that he is a pawn in a larger game – and that he might have the power to tip the scales in a high-stakes struggle between man and dragon.
One Boy. Jack McKinley is an ordinary kid with an extraordinary problem. In a few months, he’s going to die. One Mission. Jack needs to find seven magic loculi that, when combined, have the power to cure him. One Problem. The loculi are the relics of a lost civilization and haven’t been seen in thousands of years. Seven Wonders. Because they’re hidden in the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World.
When four middle schoolers discover that they can transform into mythological animals, they become part of a powerful, hidden world—the world of Changers—in this wild new urban fantasy series. Mack, Fiona, Darren, and Gabriella aren’t exactly friends at their middle school—in fact, they couldn’t have anything less in common. But when they start developing powers, including the ability to transform into mythological animals, they find out that they are Changers, a magical line of shapeshifters that history has forgotten. But there’s little time for questions. A powerful warlock is racing toward their town, destroying everything in his wake. Can Mack, Fiona, Darren, and Gabriella harness their newfound powers in time to save their home? Can they even stop arguing before the last bell?

But as winter stretches on, and the unending ice refuses to break, terrible acts of treachery soon make it clear that a traitor lurks in their midst. Solveig must also embark on a journey to find her own path. Yet, a malevolent air begins to seep through the fortress walls, as a smothering claustrophobia slowly turns these prisoners of winter against one another.
Those charged with protecting the king’s children are all suspect, and the siblings must choose their allies wisely. But who can be trusted so far from their father’s watchful eye? Can Solveig survive the long winter months and expose the traitor before he manages to destroy a kingdom?

With revenge on his mind, he summons the powerful djinni, Bartimaeus. But summoning Bartimaeus and controlling him are two different things entirely, and when Nathaniel sends the djinni out to steal Lovelace’s greatest treasure, the Amulet of Samarkand, he finds himself caught up in a whirlwind of magical espionage, murder, and rebellion
Sky Jumpers by Peggy Eddleman
Twelve-year-old Hope lives in White Rock, a town of inventors struggling to recover from World War III. But adventurous Hope is terrible at inventing. She would much rather sneak off to cliff dive into the Bomb’s Breath, the deadly band of air that surrounds the town. When bandits invade White Rock to steal its greatest invention—priceless antibiotics—the town is left with a heartbreaking choice: hand over the medicine and die from disease, or die fighting the bandits. Help lies in a neighboring town, but the bandits count everyone fourteen and older each hour. Now Hope and her friends Aaren and Brock are only ones who can escape through the Bomb’s Breath. For once, the daring and rebelliousness that usually get Hope into trouble might just save them all.

Dragonwatch by Brandon Mull
In the hidden dragon sanctuary of Wyrmroost, Celebrant the Just, King of the Dragons, plots his revenge. Fablehaven by Brandon Mull
For centuries mystical creatures of all description were gathered into a hidden refuge called Fablehaven to prevent their extinction. The sanctuary survives today as one of the last strongholds of true magic. Enchanting? Absolutely. Exciting? You bet. Safe? Well, actually, quite the opposite.
Kendra and her brother, Seth, have no idea that their grandfather is the current caretaker of Fablehaven. Inside the gated woods, ancient laws keep relative order among greedy trolls, mischievous satyrs, plotting witches, spiteful imps, and jealous fairies. However, when the rules get broken — Seth is a bit too curious and reckless for his own good — powerful forces of evil are unleashed, and Kendra and her brother face the greatest challenge of their lives. To save their family, Fablehaven, and perhaps even the world, Kendra and Seth must find the courage to do what they fear most.
Trenton Colman is a creative thirteen-year-old boy with a knack for all things mechanical. But his talents are viewed with suspicion in Cove, a steam-powered city built inside a mountain. In Cove, creativity is a crime and “invention” is a curse word. Kallista Babbage is a repair technician and daughter of the notorious Leo Babbage, whose father died in an explosion —an event the leaders of Cove point to as an example of the danger of creativity. Working together, Trenton and Kallista learn that Leo Babbage was developing a secret project before he perished. Following clues he left behind, they begin to assemble a strange machine that is unlikely anything they’’ve ever seen before. They soon discover that what they are building may threaten every truth their city is founded on —and quite possibly their very lives.
Wings of Fire by Tui T. Sutherland
Clay and his friends have grown up under a mountain, secretly raised by the Talons of Peace to fulfill a mysterious prophecy. The five young dragons are destined to end the war that’s been raging between the tribes of Pyrrhia — but how they’ll do this, none of them knows. But not every dragonet wants a destiny. When one of their own is threatened, Clay and his friends decide to escape. Maybe they can break free and end the war at the same time — or maybe they’ll risk everything …

Marie Lu Brings Batman to Life

Review by author Robin M. King

(Cue theme music) Duh duh duh duh duh duh duh duh. Duh duh duh duh duh duh duh duh. Batman! Come on. You have to know the original cartoon theme song to Batman, right? Well, if you didn’t, I won’t judge you and your lack of knowledge of everything DC Icons. But, no worries. Because Batman is back and in young adult form. That is, novel form.

Batman:Nightwalker by Marie Lu

Batman: Nightwalker is a tale of a teenage Bruce Wayne before he become the infamous Batman. With a compelling and unique take on young Bruce, Marie Lu tells of Bruce’s need to solve the mystery gripping the city after a group calling themselves the Nightwalkers target Gotham City’s rich and elite. After meeting with Madeleine, a very intelligent young woman who happens to be an inmate at Arkham Asylum and a central figure in the Nightwalkers, Bruce has to decide if he has what it takes to save the city and himself.

Review by Robin M. King

I don’t know about you guys, but this is the first time I have read anything following a younger version of Batman/Bruce Wayne. I think knowing his story as he was younger gives his character so much more depth and makes me want to go watch every movie I have seen of Batman to see how their stories work together.

If you love heroes and amazing writing as much as I do, you can get a copy of Batman: Nightwalker in the January LitJoy Crate. And the book is SIGNED by Marie Lu!!! Plus, Marie helped to pick all the items that come with the box to make your super hero dreams come true.

Book Review: Topaz Reign by Teresa Richards

Book cover of Topaz Reign, a twisted fairy tale

I love fairy tales but I'm always on the search for something slightly different. If a book can pull me in like a classic fairy tale and yet still leave me guessing, then I love it even more. Topaz Reign in one of those books. When I found out it takes the classic story of Thumbelina, but gives it a twist, I knew it was going to be something unique and fun.

Before you jump in to Topaz Reign, you should probably read Emerald Bound first (check out my review here). Both books are in the Altered Stones series by Teresa Richards. Emerald Bound follows the story of The Princess and the Pea.

Topaz Reign continues the story of Maggie and Lindy, but with new problems, more romance, and a bit of time travel. I was sad at the end of Emerald Bound when present-day Maggie stays in our world and Lindy returns to her tiny Scandinavian country over 400 years before because I wanted them to stay friends! But, in Topaz Reign, they meet up again because during some of Maggie's research on Lindy's country, she discovers that history is changing. That leads her to realize that the curse she broke of the Emerald Necklace had consequences. Now she must find a way to get things back to where they are supposed to be, all while Lindy has to deal with her country being overtaken by an imposter.

My favorite part about these books is how they take Hans Christian Andersen's fairy tales and turn them into something a little darker (like all the original Grimm stories), but then they still give you that happily-ever-after feeling too. I think the combination of our contemporary world and the historical fantasy part put together give these novels a uniqueness I haven't seen in any young adult books. They are definitely worth the read for teens and adults who love to keep their youth alive.

Book Review: Emerald Bound ( A Twisted Fairy Tale)

I love books that can take a story that we've all heard before, but twist it around into something entirely different. I felt this about Cinder (Lunar Chronicles) by Marissa Meyer and any story that is patterned after Jane Austen's classic Pride and Prejudice. The Altered Stones series is another set of books that does just that! The first book, Emerald Bound, takes the classic fairy tale of Princess and the Pea and turns it into a contemporary fantasy (and altered historical fantasy in parts).

Emerald Bound follows the story of two teens - Maggie in present day and Lindy in a fantasy country (bordering present-day Sweden) of nearly 400 years before, as well as Lindy in present day. Both girls in their separate times are tricked into becoming part of an ancient curse involving princesses, emeralds (which are referred to as peas to keep them secret), and uncomfortable mattresses. When Maggie's best friend goes missing, she discovers that gems feed on life and that her own history is quite different than she thought. With the help of present-day Lindy and Garon, a handsome stranger who is somehow connected to the emerald, Maggie is sent on a quest to retrieve the emerald before her best friend's fate is sealed.

I would highly recommend this book to readers that love a happy ending, but don't mind a bit of mystery and darkness on the side. If you are a fan of Jenni James or other authors that have taken simple fairy tales and woven them into something frightening and beautiful at the same time, you will enjoy the twists and turns of Emerald Bound.

This Never Happens! .99 for Remembrandt

I'm seriously a little shocked that I was able to convince my publisher to offer the ebook of Remembrandt for .99! It's been nearly 3 years since the first book in the Remembrandt series has come out.  I've been wanting to do it since the final book in the series, Memory of Monet, came out. And now it is under a dollar! Spread the word because it will only stay this way a short time.

................NEWS.................
(Why I'm Busy and What I'm Writing Next)

  • I'll be at The League of Utah Writers Conference Friday, October 5. You can still signup or just show up (because Friday is FREE). I won't be at an official booth or teaching, but if you see me, I'd be happy to sign a book (I'll keep a few with me if you want to buy one). Also, anyone who sees me and wants a free audiobook of Remembrandt just has to mention they read it here and it theirs! Or just email me or message me if you promise to add a review online and it's yours too.
  • Van Gogh Gone Audiobook is almost here! (It should be ready by November 1).
  • Remembrandt Audiobook available here or on Amazon!
  • I'm teaching a writing bootcamp and a class at Snow College on October 13-14 at Write Here in Ephraim. You can still register!
  • My latest completed manuscript, The Forgotten Sin-you is a young adult fantasy that is a loosely-based retelling of Sword and the Stone with Eastern Asian influences, a female protagonist, a mythical creature, and the heist of a century. I'm currently agent hunting. I have had great interest and some requests for the full manuscript and I've only contacted 7 agents. I have my *fingers crossed* that my favorite agent wants it, but if they pass, I've got a list of potential ones I'm hoping to submit to soon!
  • I'm participating in NANOWRIMO this year! Basically, it National Novel Writing Month and you write 1,667 words per day for the whole month to get 50,000 words towards a new novel. I'm planning on starting the sequel to The Forgotten Sin-you.
  • On October 26 at 6pm, I'll be at eBorn Books (254 S. Main Street, Salt Lake City, UT) with some other authors talking about Horror, Thrillers, and Romantic Suspense. I'll also be chatting about how to make espionage come alive on the page (Event link here).
  • I've started taking Shotokan Karate with my husband with Ronin Dragon Karate. I've always wanted to learn a martial art and my husband and I needed something to do together (I think 'couples karate' should be a thing and considered a form of marriage therapy). It was also sparked by my love of Eastern Asia (my research for my newest novel) and watching Iron Fist on Netflix. I've also started to do more yoga since my last marathon because of some overuse injuries. I'm starting to understand my CHI and how to focus myself mentally, which I always thought was weird, but now I think is amazing.
  • I participated in Salt Lake Comic Con this year, including my stint as Fleur Delacour from Harry Potter, a performance on stage in front of thousands of people, and a Stephen Amell sighting. All of which gave me butterflies - literally too, because I had butterflies releasing from my hands during my performance. My costume didn't win any contests, but I had so many people ask how I made it and have their picture taken with me, it was worth it (here's my tutorial on how I made it).

I'm hoping my next NEWS with be even bigger than my 99 cent book (your prayers and fingers crossing strongly encouraged as I agent hunt).

Robin

Book Review: From Grandma to You - Childcare Wisdom for a New Generation

You know how there are things you read or advice you're given that you wished you'd read or been told years ago? That's exactly how I felt after I read From Grandma to You: Childcare Wisdom for a New Generation

This quaint little book written by Joan D. Hellstrom, Susan D. Findlay, Connie E. Ray, and Dr. Homer R. Rich is filled with knowledge, advice, and quotes pertaining to child rearing, being a grandparent and much more. It's like having your mom or grandma give you all the advice you need all in one place. Filled with old black and white photos of babies, children, and family, this book of wisdom leaves you feeling a little bit nostalgic, even if you didn't live in the same time period as many of the authors.

I found myself laughing at some of the old remedies for ailments (many of which still work today!) or smiling at the advice given by Dr. Rich.

Here are some of my favorite little bits:

  • "I would encourage parents to allow their special youngsters to explore and experience - and even fail - right along with their peers." (This was advice given to parents with physically or mentally challenged children.)
  • "Choose which feeding method is best for you, not which method is more politically correct at the moment."
  • "Most babies give up thumbsucking by the time they get married." -Homer Rich, MD-
  • "Wouldn't it be better if all babies received the emotional warmth and trust they need without demanding it?"
  • "Learn to gratefully accept help from others; there are no prizes for the mother who does it all."

If you're looking for a great gift for the mom or grandma in your life for birthdays, Christmas, or Mother's Day, From Grandma to You is it!

If you want to snag your own copy, you can find it on Amazon here.
